Chairman's Corner Our mission at the Workforce Development Board is to insure that every citizen has the opportunity and skills necessary to engage in meaningful employment throughout Okaloosa and Walton Counties, and that every business has access to educated, trained and prepared employees. Through “Workforce Developments” we endeavor to keep you up to date on some of the many ways we are working to fulfill our mission.
Workplace Excellence Award and Recognition Event Planned 1st Annual Breakfast of Champions to be Held in September
Winners of the three 2005 Workplace Excellence Awards will be announced and honored at the Breakfast of Champions on September 22, 2005 at the Emerald Coast Conference Center. The Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties, the Economic Development Council of Okaloosa County and the Walton County Economic Development Council are co-sponsoring this event to honor those area businesses and organizations that lead the community in providing a quality workplace.
Workforce Development Board Members Attend National Association of Workforce Boards Conference in Washington D.C.
Members of the local Workforce Development Board recently participated in the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) 2005 Forum in Washington D.C. The Conference was attended by over 2,000 representatives of Workforce Development Boards from throughout the United States.
Region Hosts Pilot Study of National Work Readiness Credential Assessment Tools
The Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties hosted a pilot study of the assessment tools developed to measure the readiness of an individual to successfully enter the workplace. Eight sites were selected nationwide to participate in this phase of the development of the Equipped for the Future (EFF) Work Readiness Credential. . Region 2 was selected as the host site in Florida.
Alpha Data's Craig Palmer Appointed to Workforce Florida, Inc. Board of Directors
Governor Jeb Bush recently appointed local businessman Craig Palmer to the Board of Directors of Workforce Florida, Inc. His term runs through July 6, 2006. A resident of Niceville, Palmer has been employed by Alpha Data Corporation since 1997. As the Director of Business Development for Alpha Data he manages all aspects of business development for the firm and provides program management for projects at Eglin AFB, Robins AFB, Randolph AFB, and Hurlburt Field. In addition he is currently managing or has managed contracts at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS, Mobile, AL, Champaign, IL and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.
Workforce Development Board Welcomes New Members Dr. David Goetsch, Commissioner Elaine Tucker and Superintendent Carlene Anderson were recently appointed to the Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties.

JobsPlus One-Stop Spirit Award Winners Named The Workforce Development Board recently honored Pam Thompson, Shelton Sumrall and Theresa Horn by naming them the 2nd Annual JobsPlus One-Stop Spirit Award winners. Employees at each JobsPlus One-Stop Center selected the employee at their center who best exemplified the spirit of service, teamwork and motivation to “get the job done”. The Workforce Development Board recognized the three winners at the March board meeting and presented each awardee with a plaque that will be displayed in their center for one year.

Florida's New Minimum Wage Now in Effect
Voters made their decision on November 2 of last year and on May 2, 2005, that decision became standard practice. That is the day that Florida's minimum wage increased to $6.15 per hour. The wage increase was introduced under Article X of the Florida Minimum Wage Amendment and will be regulated by Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI).
At the Workforce Development Board, our mission is simple:
